Many businesses try one marketing channel at a time. A few months of Instagram. Then some Google ads. Then a new website. Each effort gets judged on its own, and none of them seem to work as well as hoped.
The missing piece is usually a funnel — a clear picture of how a stranger becomes a customer, and which channels help at each stage. Once you see the journey, your marketing starts working as a system instead of a series of experiments.
The four stages, in plain English
Every customer journey, from choosing a dentist to booking a hotel, moves through roughly the same stages:
- Awareness — they discover you exist
- Consideration — they compare you with alternatives and decide whether to trust you
- Conversion — they take action: call, book, buy, visit
- Loyalty — they come back, and ideally recommend you
Different channels are strong at different stages. Problems start when a business expects one channel to do everything.
Map your channels to the journey
| Stage | Customer question | Channels that help |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | “Who can help me with this?” | Meta ads, social content, local search, word of mouth |
| Consideration | “Can I trust them?” | Website, reviews, Google Business Profile, case studies |
| Conversion | “How do I get started?” | Landing pages, WhatsApp, booking forms, calls |
| Loyalty | “Should I go back?” | Follow-ups, offers, community, great service |
Look honestly at your own business. Where are people dropping off? Plenty of awareness but few enquiries usually points to a consideration problem — weak website, few reviews, unclear offer. Plenty of enquiries but few bookings usually points to a conversion or follow-up problem.
Awareness: be where attention already is
At the top of the funnel you’re introducing yourself. Useful tactics:
- Short, engaging video content that shows what you do
- Targeted Meta campaigns to people in your area
- Showing up in local search for problem-based queries
- Partnerships and events in your community
The goal isn’t to sell immediately. It’s to be remembered.
Consideration: remove doubt
This is where most sales are won or lost. Customers are comparing you with two or three others. Help them decide:
- A fast, clear website with specific service pages (why speed matters)
- Recent, genuine reviews and replies
- Proof of results — photos, case studies, before-and-after
- Transparent information on pricing, process and what to expect
Conversion: make the next step effortless
Every extra click, field or unanswered question loses people. Offer the channels your customers prefer — for many Indian businesses, that means WhatsApp alongside calls and forms. Keep forms short. Respond fast; the first business to reply often wins.
The best funnel in the world leaks if nobody answers the phone.
Loyalty: the most underrated stage
Winning a new customer costs far more than keeping an existing one. Simple loyalty tactics:
- Thank-you messages and follow-ups after service
- Reminders for repeat needs — check-ups, servicing, seasonal offers
- Asking happy customers for reviews and referrals
- Staying visible through social content
Loyal customers also feed the top of the funnel through recommendations, which is how the funnel starts to become a flywheel — something we explore in the growth flywheel.
Measure the journey, not just the channels
Track a handful of numbers at each stage: reach, website visitors, enquiries, bookings, repeat customers. When you improve one stage, the effect flows through the rest. A modest improvement in conversion rate can be worth more than doubling your ad budget.
Putting it together
A funnel doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. Start by mapping your current journey, find the biggest leak and fix that first. Then move to the next one.
